Leafy

Catching up a little.  This group of pictures is from a couple weeks ago.  This was an interesting drive because we compared Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons on the same day, and Little Cottonwood was far brighter.  These reds just spilled down the canyon right onto the foothills.  I don't know if it's the way the sun hits this hill or what (temperature changes? angle of drainage?), but those maples were amazing.

Higher up, the aspens take over.  Yellows replace the reds.

Some sort of heathen dance going on here

Ky found a heart

Mapleton, later that day.  Bright reds here too.

We drove a little way up Maple Canyon and there were a few spectacular trees.  Not as many as some years, though.  The early snow must have been heavy here---there were broken branches everywhere.  It looked like a huge windstorm had blown through, ripping trees off mid-trunk in some places.  It is strange that such a gentle, fluffy, incremental little thing can wreak such destruction.

  1. I was noticing the Mapleton benches the other day and wishing I had a horse and was riding through them. But I've never seen the Cottonwood Canyons. Surely there are trails there? You certainly spend a lot of time looking for beauty. Don't you have something responsible to do? (HA)

And excuse me, but every time I see these autumn pictures you show up, I do a heathen little dance myself.

    Junie is adorable.

  2. K: We had never been to the Cottonwood Canyons before we moved up here either! I didn't even know there were so many canyons in SL Valley. Now we love them all. I don't know about horse trails, though---I'm sure there are some. And we've seen droppings while hiking. :) Next year you can come up and ride them.
