Lucia-light

In the past, we've had no problem moving our celebration of Santa Lucia Day to different days to make it more convenient. But this year…there WAS no convenient time. The older boys just have to leave too early! So there was nothing for it but to get up before them. However, I did have the brilliant idea of making the dough the night before and letting it do its first rise overnight in the cold garage, so that it didn't need to be quite so early!

Still, the girls and I were up at 5 to shape the buns and make the hot chocolate. It was surprisingly fun to be up so early together, whispering and bumping into things and rolling out the dough by tree-light and candle-light. I love these little but not-really-quite-so-little daughters of mine. We have so much fun together! Back when I was a little girl myself, looking through the American Girl doll catalog and admiring Kirsten's Santa Lucia outfit (my friend had the actual doll, and she was so cute), I could never have imagined I'd someday have so many little Lucias of my very own!

We didn't quite like to have the little boys eat their lussekatter and cocoa in bed. So Goldie set up a little breakfast table for them on the block table. They were so excited and cute as they ate!
As soon as Clementine got up, the other girls went to work getting her dressed up. Now, technically, the oldest daughter is supposed to be Lucia…to be the only Lucia. But we've never had the heart to limit ourselves to that. And once you have three Lucias…well, why not four?
The girls gave Clementine her own little tray. With her own little bun on it to deliver. But I am very sorry to have to report that she didn't deliver it to anyone. She sat right down and ate it herself! Tsk tsk.
She was rather pleased about it, too.
She and Daisy had a nice little chat.
She had another try with the tray
Not very successfully
She's a bit of a monkey!
Running hither and yon with the (now empty) tray
After eating his own breakfast, Ziggy began feeling quite left out, as Teddy has in other years. It's understandable, with all his sisters looking so cute and being so excited. First he went and got his Israelite robe and said he was Santa Luke.
Then we found pictures of "Star Boys" (obviously a made-up thing to console countless other forlorn little brothers in Sweden and Denmark) so Daisy made him a star hat.
Clementine continued to toddle around charming everyone
With and without her candle crown.
It started snowing as the day got light outside, and it was so pretty, and made us feel so snug inside the house!
We have a friend in the ward who is Swedish, so the girls delivered some of our extra Lussekatter to her.
Her husband took this picture from the other side!

Such a fun day and a fun tradition. We're so grateful for Jesus Christ, our true light in the darkness, and His example of service and love!
