Silver Falls

There's another reason we like to go to the Hazelnut House, and that is that it's near Silver Falls State Park, the prettiest place in the world! Or one of them anyway. It is funny that last time we visited, Oregon was having another unusual heat wave, and we had temperatures in the 100's. And this time, they hadn't seen such high temperatures since…last time we came! We were worried we'd be miserable in the heat. But the day we went to Silver Falls, it was overcast and not too hot, and we even had a few little sprinkles of rain!
The drive up to the park was particularly nice this time, as there were a bunch of fields of flowers in bloom. I'm not sure what these purple ones were…
but these red ones were poppies, and they were beautiful!! (And let me tell you, the children were VERY HAPPY to let me stop and take pictures of these fields. They did NOT COMPLAIN AT ALL.šŸ™„)
When we got to the park, Gus, from his perch in the hiking backpack, was VERY IMPRESSED with his first waterfall. He gasped and said a bunch of words (unintelligible, as most of his are, but the sense of them was pure amazement) and even managed a decipherable "wa-ter-fall" when we were talking about it afterwards.
This was a common sight…the rest of us finishing up a hike only to see the three big boys waiting patiently for us at the end, having finished ages earlier. At least they had each other!
Everyone gathered around to see a fuzzy caterpillar. What can I say; we like caterpillars in this family!
Our favorite two waterfalls are the ones you can walk behind and under.
It was so cute to see Gus taking everything in, and looking with interest at everything Sam was looking at (a hole in the rock ceiling, in this case).
Such a pretty place!
