Aspenwood

When we drive to see the leaves these days, not just anyone is allowed to come with us! (That's how I frame it to myself now that…not everyone wants to come anymore. *sniff*) These were the favored few on a drive up Little Cottonwood Canyon a few Sundays ago: Clementine (of course), Daisy, and Teddy. I suppose the canyon is named for cottonwood trees, and there must be some…down along the river? But my favorite trees in the Fall are the aspens!

It was such a beautiful day! We met another baby out looking at the leaves (with her parents). We sized her up and she sized us up, and eventually it came out that she was born the day before Clementine! And her name was Emmeline!  Fun.
You can tell the leaves are going to be good when this is what they look like from far away.
And sure enough! The trees were gorgeous up at the top. Layers and layers of this golden yellow.
I feel like I'm always exclaiming about how unusual it is to see orange and red aspens along with the yellow. I've been exclaiming about it for enough years now that maybe I have to admit it isn't THAT unusual…but I still think it's interesting! What makes them turn these orange and yellow-orange colors? There were huge patches of them colored like that this year; more than I've ever seen before, I think! It add such depth to the hillsides. Like an oil painting.
More of those oranges, just at the very top of the yellow trees, like the extra-toasty tips on a macaroon. (Is that the word I want? Yes. It is.)
Little Clemmy-baby. And me.
I do love a picture with all the colors in it. (Although you could argue we're missing purple.)
And even more rainbow leaves. My favorite!
There's the lone figure of Sam going to move the car because we parked it in "not a real place." Bless him.
Ah. I don't know if there's any other color as beautiful as that gold-yellow!
I always love this view: glints of yellow amid the green.
A Peeking Clementine.
More multi-colored aspens. Aren't they amazing?! I just love them. We could have happily named a daughter "Aspen."
There couldn't possibly be anywhere prettier than Utah in the Fall…could there?
