All the camps

Someday June will not be full of camps for us. This year was not that year. And knowing Malachi would be leaving for his mission this summer (but not when) made everything feel a little more frantic. It was our stake's year for FSY, and Ky decided to go one more time, but he went the last week of May to make sure it wouldn't interfere with his mission. The girls (Daisy and Junie) wanted to go to FSY early in June also to avoid conflicting with YW camp, but that meant they had to go to Snow College instead of the much-more-convenient BYU. And Malachi had all kinds of last-camping-trips and last-time-with-this-friend events he wanted to do in addition to our own family trip we were hoping to fit in. Whew! It makes me tired just remembering it.

Longest Day Party

I can't keep up! Here this was the first day of summer and now it's practically the last! It's not exactly that I never have a free moment. It's just that when I have a free moment…I fall asleep. I'll sit down next to Clementine when she has her nap, thinking, "Ah, I have two hours of quiet and now I can get something done…" and then (IF no one needs a ride anywhere, and IF no one needs help with something, and IF no one needs to ask me 400 questions [once I set a timer for 20 minutes so I could take a short nap. And within that 20 minutes, before that timer rang, four separate kids had come in to ask me a question! Four!!!])…I end up feeling so sleepy that even if I don't lie down, I can't think straight enough to do anything useful!

Well. At any rate, these things do want recording. We like reading about them and looking at the pictures later so much! So, here was our Longest Day Party. We had cucumber sandwiches (surprisingly good, those, boring as they sound) and little upside-down puff pastry tarts which I had seen a video for somewhere and was intrigued with. You just put a little olive oil or balsamic vinegar on a sheet pan, then a fruit or vegetable and maybe some cheese or herbs, and then lay a puff pastry square on top! The toppings bake and get crispy on the pan and the pastry puffs up to assimilate them. They are quite good! We made peach-honey-basil, salami and tomato, and shallot-cheese-thyme.
The entertainment at these little parties of ours consists of…putting up the hammocks, getting in and out of the hammocks, and taking the hammocks down. Oh, we also played frisbee a little, and horseshoes. Pretty exciting!
The girls amused themselves (and others) by posing like high-fashion models. (Or at least what we think high-fashion models pose like, which is incorrect, for all I know. Sorry if we offend any high-fashion-model readers of this blog.)
Some snuggling
Some silliness (what long legs you have, Gus!)
Malachi sighting!
More leg-silliness
More models
It was weird on this day, because we'd had SUCH a hot week previous, we weren't sure if it would even be fun to do an outdoor picnic, but then a cold front blew in and it was so mild and pleasant. In fact, as the sun got lower in the sky and the wind started getting stronger, it got downright chilly! We ended up going home before it was completely dark because we were just too cold! That's pretty rare for June 21st.
All the little moths in their cocoons.

Longest Day party

I don't believe in the Summer Solstice being on any day but June 21st. Okay, I'll give you the equinoxes. They're more equivocal and can shift from the 20th to the 22nd if you insist. But the Solstices must remain on the 21st of June and December. Those are the official First Days of Summer and Winter and thus I have decreed it!

…However, celebrating the solstice can acceptably be done on another day as desired, and it was desired this year because everyone was so busy! Seb and Malachi were working all week. Junie was at Oakcrest girls' camp. Daisy was at FSY. And when I made a few experimental murmurings about just having our Longest Day party without whoever wasn't here…both Malachi and Seb seemed surprisingly against it! So we celebrated on the Sunday when everyone would be home.
It was a good party as always. Simple. Chicken tacos we mostly made at home and just threw in a cooler for our picnic. S'mores bars. Frisbees. And hammocks.
It was such a hot day. But once the sun went down it was beautiful!

Longest Day, and other days

The days have gotten so long! (And are now getting shorter…but let's not think about that.) There's often a hint of daylight in the East at the end of my morning run, and when I get up (again) to take Seb and Ky to cross-country, the sun is up!
We made homemade pizza and root beer on the Longest Day of the Year this year, and sent the little kids outside to eat while the older boys and Sam and I ate inside in (relative) peace and quiet.
I say relative peace and quiet because of this silly guy. It's quite scary when he just picks up a whole piece of pizza and chomps into it.
Our neighbors, bless them, are cleaning out their garage (thus the foosball table they gave us in the last post) and gave our kids a bunch of hula hoops. I have never SEEN such fun with hula hoops! Some of the other neighbors came over and they were all playing with the hula hoops together—rolling them down the hill, having contests, making trains. It was pretty cute.
We hated to put a stop to the hula-hooping, but Daisy and Junie came in on their own and insisted that we keep our tradition of going to the hammock park until it got dark. So off we went with our hammocks.
Gussie quite liked it.
Malachi forbade me from taking any pictures of him in "undignified" positions.
9:21 p.m.
9:35 p.m.
And just about the verrrrry last of the light…9:42 p.m.
Back home in the dark! And bedtime for kids who are, somehow, never as sleepy as they ought to be.
That was our Longest Day party, but there have been other days. Days where Gus won't go anywhere without his "Caw"…
Days with hats and one big glove (and don't miss the scrunchie up by his sleeve)…
Snuggling and work days…
Days where someone tries to make himself into a robot…
And a big brother takes pity on him and makes him into a BETTER robot…
Days of wearing headbands and…chest bands?…
Days of sitting on the porch and yelling "BYE!" at everyone who drives past…
Days of people climbing who shouldn't really be climbing…
Days of tiny, tiny, tiny people running around in circles on top of hills…
And days of eerily-lit sunsets. Lots of good days!
